Around 99% of the world's most famous concert pianists play a grand piano from Steinway & Sons. The company was founded in New York in 1853 by the Steinweg family, who were immigrants to the city. The company has operated the factory in Hamburg as a second production facility since 1880. The two factories produce around 3,000 grand pianos and 600 pianos each year. The vertical range of manufacture is very high.
Apart from the cast plate, into which a CNC machine in Hamburg drills around 450 holes, most components of the body are made of high-quality wood. That means: that wood chips and wood dust need to be vacuumed and extracted at a large number of systems and assembly stations throughout the Steinway factory.
Steinway chose Ruwac as its vacuum cleaner supplier decades ago, and has remained with the company ever since. Over ninety Ruwac vacuum cleaners – the oldest one built in 1979 – are in use in the Hamburg piano factory. Most of these are used for both floor cleaning and to extract wood chips and dusts on pianos and grand pianos during production. A Ruwac vacuums metal chips on the CNC system used to process the cast plates.
