"Semi-portable" chip extraction in marker pen production

Customer: Edding
Extracted material: Plastic chips
Industry: General industry
Vacuum cleaner: Ruwac DS 1400

The Edding group, headquartered in Hamburg, has achieved what so many companies strive for: its main product has become a household name. For many consumers, a felt-tipped marker is just “an Edding”. The company also produces a wide range of other products in the writing and marking, printing, cosmetics and visual communication sectors, however they still focus on a wide portfolio of felt-tipped markers.

Problem

About 50% of all Edding pens are manufactured in the Bautzen plant, which was built in 1992 and produces up to 200,000 felt-tipped markers per shift. Precise cutting of the barrels is just one the primarily automated processes completed there. This creates elongated polypropylene chips that have to be directly extracted.

Solution

A type DS 1400 Ruwac three-phase vacuum cleaner handles the task, although it was designed for use as a mobile device for cleaning floors and industrial equipment. Edding, however, uses the device as a “semi-mobile” or “semi-stationary” vacuum cleaner.

The suction points, i.e. the suction hoses, are directly integrated into the production facilities. The vacuum system is switched on and off with the rest of the plant. The extracted chips are collected in a suction container upstream of the vacuum cleaner itself, so they can be emptied easily.

As one line produces several pens at a time, there are a number of parallel trimming stations and five hoses connected to the drum. This is quite an eye-catching design, although it was chosen for technical and economic reasons rather than aesthetics!

The managers at the Edding plant decided against a central vacuum system, partly because their design motto is “Keep it simple” and also because they wanted to ensure the greatest possible flexibility. They achieved this goal to the letter: When the production line stops, personnel can use the mobile series industrial vacuum cleaner to clean the floor and production machinery. All they have to do is change the attachment. This cuts costs and has given the company the benefit of a dual-use vacuum for central extraction and portable cleaning.
